Review: The scary truth of the digital world

Logout is a story set in Delhi that holds a mirror to today’s social media generation. The film revolves around Prateek Dua aka Pratman (Babil Khan), a famous social media influencer who is in a race to achieve the milestone of 10 million followers. But his life turns upside down when his phone falls into the hands of an obsessed fan who hijacks his digital identity. This cyber thriller is not only full of thrills but also raises questions about how much control smartphones and social media have in our lives.
Babil Khan is the soul of this film. His performance is so raw and relatable that you feel Pratik’s fear, anxiety and desperation. In one scene, when he suffers a breakdown during a live stream, a fan’s comment—“Better acting than the nepo kids”—reflects the film’s self-aware humour. Many critics have praised Babil, such as @ReelReptile
who wrote on X, “Babil Khan is smart, self-aware and extremely watchable.” His acting gives the film a solid base, especially when the story hinges on a single setting (Pratik’s room) and long dialogues.
Acting
Rasika Dugal and Nimisha Nair have limited roles but are impressive. Nimisha, who voices Pratmaniac (fan), has been considered weak in some reviews, such as Moneycontrol, who wrote that her voice does not have the mystery or creepiness that was needed. Still, the film’s writing and direction make up for this shortcoming to a large extent. Biswapati Sarkar, best known for shows like Maal Legal Hai and Kaala Paani, has brilliantly captured the toxic culture of social media in the script. One dialogue—“Hum Apne Phone Mein Nahi Dekhe, Hum Unko Jeeta Hai”—makes the audience think.
Direction
Amit Golani’s direction is sharp and engaging. The film’s “screenlife” style, where the story mostly progresses through computer screens, links it to films like CTRL and Loveyappa, but Logout makes its own mark. Times Now called it “intense, thought-provoking and deeply unsettling”. However, there are some shortcomings. There are some logical gaps in the script, like Pratik not taking a backup phone in the beginning or not contacting the cab driver directly. The story gets a bit predictable and weak in the last 20 minutes, as noted by News18 and Koimoi. The lack of a deeper discussion on cybercrime is also felt.
Still, Logout is a relatable and timely film. It brilliantly portrays social media addiction, lack of privacy, and the race for online validation. India Forums wrote, “The film asks—if you lose your phone, do you lose yourself?” This question forces the audience to reflect on their screen time.
Verdict: 3.5/5 – A Relatable and Thrilling Cyber Drama

Logout is an impressive cyber thriller with a brilliant performance by Babil Khan, smart writing by Biswapati Sarkar, and sharp direction by Amit Golani. A few logical gaps and weak resolution prevent it from being perfect, but the film manages to bring out the truth of social media. If you love thrillers or digital-age dramas, this is a great pick for your weekend on ZEE5.
