Manoj Kumar’s real name was Harikrishna Giri Goswami. He was born on 24 July 1937 in Abbottabad, North-West Frontier Province of British India (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) to a Punjabi Hindu Brahmin family. His family moved to Delhi during the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Hindu College, University of Delhi. In his early days, he was very influenced by actors Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar, due to which he named himself “Manoj Kumar”, which was inspired by Dilip Kumar’s character in the film “Shabnam”. He died on 4 April 2025 in Mumbai, at the age of 87.
Manoj Kumar was married to Shashi Goswami. The couple always maintained privacy about their personal life. They have two sons – Kunal Goswami and Vishal Goswami. Kunal also tried his hand at acting but could not achieve success like his father. His family includes his parents H.L. Goswami and Krishna Kumari Goswami, brother Rajiv Goswami and sister Neelam Goswami. Manoj Kumar’s family is carrying forward his simplicity and values even after his death.

Manoj Kumar started his film career in 1957 with the film “Fashion”, in which he played a small role. His first lead role came in 1961 in the film “Kaanch Ki Gudiya”. However, he got real recognition in 1962 with the film “Hariyali Aur Raasta”, in which he starred opposite Mala Sinha. This was followed by “Shaheed” (1965) which established him as a patriotic icon, in which he played the role of Bhagat Singh.

After the Indo-Pak war of 1965, the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri urged him to make a film based on the slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”, which resulted in “Upkaar” in 1967. This film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Director. Subsequent films like “Purab Aur Paschim” (1970), “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” (1974), and “Kranti” (1981) took his career to new heights. He received his second Filmfare Best Director Award for “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan”.
He acted in more than 40 films in his career and also directed many films. The film “Jai Hind” with his son Kunal Goswami in 1999 was the last film of his career. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.
