Review: A unique blend of humor and philosophy
Bong Joon Ho specialty is that he presents every genre in his own unique way, and Mickey 17 is a great example of this. Based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7, this film is the story of Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), who is an “expendable” worker in a mission to colonize the icy planet Niflheim. Mickey’s job is to go on a dangerous mission, die, and then be resurrected with his memories in a new body. This concept is so funny and scary that Bong presents it brilliantly with humor and deep philosophy.
Robert Pattinson does a great job in the role of Mickey. His humor, his human simplicity and the frustration of dying over and over again are portrayed so beautifully that you will want to applaud for Mickey. Steven Yeun brings emotional depth as a friend, while Naomi Ackie’s character is a mix of strength and sensitivity. “’Mikey 17′ is a unique science-fiction film that keeps its audience captivated with laughter, thrills and deep questions.” Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo are also strong in their roles, which further deepen the film’s story of morality and power.
Bong’s direction shines in every scene. He presents dark comedy in a way that makes you laugh and think – what does it mean to be human? The visuals of the film keep you hooked. The icy planet of Niflheim is so beautiful and scary that you will want to see it only on the big screen. Disadvantages?
The second half seems a little slow when the film gets entangled in colonial politics. But Bong quickly gives the story a thrilling twist, and the last half is so powerful that you forget all that. The duration of 2 hours and 19 minutes is just right for the grandeur of the story, but if you just want a light comedy, then it might seem a bit heavy. Still, this small shortcoming does not take away the magic of the film.
If you like mind-boggling sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Ex Machina, then Mickey 17 is made for you. It is not just entertainment, but an experience that stays with you long after the film is over. Bong’s blend of blockbuster and arthouse cinema makes it worth watching in theatres.
